LEAF - Local Ecology and Agriculture Fremont

Hi All,

Finally I decided to take on this issue. It is hard for me to see so many fruits being wasted. I have identified Second Chance Office, Tri-City Volunteers, Salvation Army and few other churches which will accept fresh produce.I have also drafted a letter that I can leave at people's doorstep and hopefully they will respond back. I am going to start from my neighbourhood and see how it goes. The following are few points I would like to start a discussion:

1. Are there more members who will be interested to join this venture?

2. How to pluck fruits high up? I do not have a fruit plucker. Except buying one is there any other solution?

3. I like the name "Fremont Fruit Foragers". Suggestions...

4. Any other ideas, suggestions.....

Hi, Sarika,

I will be happy to join you. I can help distribute letters and pick fruit. The trees at Ohlone College are full of apricots when they have their season, but you have to keep an eye on them because a commercial picker will get them all. Did you know that SF Foragers has an ipod app showing the location of their forageable trees? We're probably going to have to invest in a couple of pluckers unless someone in LEAF has extras. Or maybe Dale Hardware or OSH would donate some?
Great Bonnie! I look forward to working with you in this venture. I can get typed letters this Saturday at our MWBC garden meeting. I was not aware of apricot trees at Ohlone college, it is a great info, let's talk more on Saturday on how to include these trees in our venture. I am aware of SF Foragers and their application, unfortunately I did not find fruit trees from Fremont area.

Fruit pluckers are must, we need to figure out how to obtain them.
This is great! We are about to plant some fruit trees and I know we will need this group!
There are fruit trees behind the California Nursery Company Historic Park---Royal, Tilton and Blenheim apricots, Bing and Tartarian cherries, Pink pearl apple, apples, persimmons, loquats, kiwi and nectarines. Niles Community Park has a nice sapote. Harvey Park has a nice old fig tree. QuarryLakes has a rare fruit orchard with plenty of rare treasures.

The Union City Community garden has a nice fruit bearing mulberry.

Alta Landscaping just planted an orchard in the Warm Spring Hills in a private backyard and here is the list. I think it would be nice to have an orchard in Union City some day!

Bill Merrill picked these as good fruiting trees for this area.
Thank you Nelson for providing us with a comprehensive list of fruit trees in/around Fremont. Do you have recommendation for whom should we contact if we want to harvest these fruits for donation?
First come first serve bases unless turned away by staff. We never monitored the orchard at California Nursery Company when I worked there. I wanted people to pick the fruit to help minimize pests from rotting fruits on the ground. We would not allow pruning equipment or ladders. A fruit picker on a pole would work and no climbing in the trees.

The one private orchard in the warm springs hills is off limits. It is a new orchard and will take a few years to mature.

Garin orchard is open to volunteers, you will need to follow up on the orchards hours.
Thank you Nelson. I will follow up with Garin orchard.
Nelson, we are picking the fruits of your labor now at the Niles Rose Garden. Many thanks! Here is a question regarding the apricot trees at Cal Nursery Orchard. They did not produce at all this year. We pruned, I think, most of them last January. Next step?

Here is another great link about fruit trees that do well here.

I almost forgot---Garin Park in Hayward has an apple orchard with about 100 different varieties,
Sarika,
I know the Ranger and the family that live on-site at Garin Regional Park. I can get you in touch with him if you need a contact person there.
Marie
It will be great to have a contact person at Garin park. Let's talk more about it when we meet for our weekly gardening workparty.

Thank you Marie!
