Full Circle Farm is an 11-acre organic, educational farm that will put fresh food in Santa Clara Unified School District cafeterias (where 45% qualify for free or reduced school lunch) while helping local youth experience success while they develop job and life skills through the growing, harvesting and marketing of fruit & vegetable crops. Programs being developed include a science and nutrition elective for 6-8th graders, a farm-based apprenticeship program for teenagers, a mentoring program where at-risk teens lead elementary youth in garden and nutrition workshops, and a variety of school field trip programs.
As a team, young people grow their own food, and develop critical life skills of communication, teamwork, leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving through practical, hands-on agricultural and entrepreneurial experiences. Full Circle Farm is a project of the nonprofit Sustainable Community Gardens.
Sustainable Community Gardens is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to the renewal of local, sustainable food systems throughout Silicon Valley. Our flagship project, Full Circle Farm, provides affordable access to local, seasonal, organically-grown produce, as well as education in environmental living, sustainable agriculture, nutrition, and gardening.
In 2009 FCF grew over 40,000 pounds of “farm-fresh” produce, donated over 10,000 pounds to local food banks and shelters, supplied weekly produce to 55 CSA (community sponsored agriculture) share holders, operated an onsite year-round Farm Stand, and provided fresh vegetables to the Santa Clara Unified School District’s Children’s Lunch Program.
Sincerely,
Rose Nichols
