It was a sunny day at LEAF. It was pretty warm. The Circular Garden was full of produce. We picked celery, radishes, snap peas, lettuce, broccoli, carrots, spinach. There was still more to pick! We got more than half a wheelbarrow full of…Continue

Comment by Deborah Mannia on May 8, 2013 at 12:11pm Last Thursday, we announced that ABODE Sunrise Village on Brown Rd is looking for a group to revitalize their garden. Raised beds are there, but no plants; just dirt is in the planters. The shelter would like somebody to plant and tend the garden. Perhaps Sunrise residents will help or take over. Due to resident turnover, it is tough to find continuity. A Junior who is new to Girl Scouts and has just been bitten by the gardening bug is interested. So far, I have not heard from anybody else, but they may have contacted ABODE directly. A written announcement will appear in the Coyote Hills Girl Scouts' online newsletter. Our troop members are separately publicizing this service opportunity.
Comment by Deborah Mannia on May 8, 2013 at 12:06pm Mikaela brought her brother to visit the garden yesterday. They weeded, watered and gave the plants some TLC. The day was mostly overcast, but balmy. Despite the heat wave we had over the weekend, the garden still looks great, although the sprinklers still do not hit the back part of the garden as well as the front part. The hot weather caused many of our leafy greens to bolt. Hopefully we'll be able to get a little more production out of them by cutting off the flowers today.
WOW! Great job Girls! They will be eating good at ABODE for sure. Thanks for all you do. Steve
Comment by Deborah Mannia on April 10, 2013 at 9:41pm Amanda and Mikaela visited the garden again on Sunday 4/7. We did a lot of weeding and harvesting. It was a pretty warm day, but not hot like Wednesday. There were so many peas that needed to be harvested! We donated 11 pounds of mixed greens, radishes, onions, peas, cabbage to ABODE. While waiting to be admitted, we talked with one of the residents, who appreciated the fresh, organically-grown produce.
Comment by Deborah Mannia on April 10, 2013 at 9:37pm On Wednesday 4/4 friends visited the garden with us! They are all Girl Scouts from San Jose. We were able to identify different vegetables (and weeds). Even though it was a warm day, all three helped to weed and harvest vegetables. We donated 5 pounds of mixed greens, radishes, onions, and peas to ABODE.
Great job Girl Scouts! You guys do make a differance in peoples lives!
Comment by Deborah Mannia on June 10, 2012 at 4:32pm This week is supposed to be hot, so the garden will need extra water. Mikaela watered today (and it needed it). Tomorrow is supposed to be hotter still.
On Saturday June 16th and Saturday June 23rd, we plan to have Senior Girl Scouts (high schoolers) join us in the garden. Their aide to us helps them finish their Journey Take Action Project! Join us at 10:30 on 6/16 and/or 10:30 on 6/23 to host these older Girl Scouts.
Comment by Deborah Mannia on June 10, 2012 at 4:30pm Girls Scout Troop 31916’s garden at LEAF Center in Niles is beautiful! It is so grounding to be amidst the corn, sunflowers, beans, tomatoes, etc.
Amoonda & Mikaela worked in the garden Saturday. Steve and Richard were kind enough to allow the two to harvest their lettuce garden. Looking like a green Santa Claus, carrying a giant sack on her back, Amanda carried the giant 30 gallon bag of green into the Tri City ABODE family shelter with Mikaela. The harvest resulted in 14 pounds of fresh, organically grown lettuce being donated to and exuberantly received by the Tri City ABODE family shelter. Thank you, Steve & Richard!
Over the past three growing seasons, our troop has donated more than 200 pounds of fresh, organically grown produce to the Tri-City ABODE family shelter on Brown Road and to the Centerville Food Bank. Thank you, LEAF, for all of your mentoring. Our troop feels so lucky to have found LEAF, whose goals so closely mirror those of the girls in our troop: to live green, support the community, and to serve the community. In fact,, this like-mindedness of goals led these 6th and 7th graders to donate a portion of their hard-earned cookies sales profits to LEAF’s efforts to serve the community. LEAF, you have made a lasting impression upon these Girl Scouts!

I mean … “Snails, Slugs and Rolly Polies. Oh My!”
I stopped at LEAF for Mikaela, who’s sick. I have Good News, and Bad News. Our corn and tomatoes look GREAT! That was the good news, of course. Now for the bad news: Unfortunately, critters have eaten nearly all of our cucumbers and some of our beans. I hand-picked 8 giant snails and 4 big slugs. The spittle bug infestation in the middle has spread, but isn’t effecting the plants’ health yet. Some weeds were pulled and some remain … but not too many. The soil has a nice moisture content. The plants seem pretty happy about our recent rain, and LOVE today’s sun! We should actively look for and hand-pick snails when we tend our garden. Things could definitely be worse.
