Greg,

We intend to move them to another part of the property and put flowers in them.

Just as soon as the rain clears up long enough for us to work on it!

Marie. Stopped by the garden last Friday, 23 March.  I see you are using pressure-treated lumber for your planter boxes. This is not a good idea, especially around food crops. Pressure-treated lumber with arsenic (chromated copper arsenic or CCA) has been phased out in the U.S. New preservatives used are Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ) and Copper Boron Azole (CBA). These and any wood preservatives contain biocides which kill bacterial and fungi. This is not what you want for healthy soil. As yet the evidence is that plant absorption of these compounds is minimal, however are these chemicals what you want in your food in any concentration? I think it fair that anyone offered food that is grown around pressure-treated wood be told so about this food. Pressure-treated wood may be good for foundations in buildings, but not for garden beds.

The problem with using non-redwood and non-cedar woods like Douglas Fir for garden beds is the growth of a black toxic fungi, Stachybotris chartarum. It is less of a problem in outdoor environments than indoor environments because of the ventilation, but why would you want to encourage toxic fungi?

May you reconsider what you are doing at Discovery Community Garden!

I think we are talking about two different forms here. One is the form that students under the age of 18 must down load from the LEAF web site, have it signed by their parents and brought to the garden if working at  LEAF garden. The other is the service hour form that Marie is talking about if that student wishes to use hours worked towards graduation. Thanks

The garden on Mission Blvd is called Discovery Community Garden.

Hello! This is Marie. If you are a students seeking service learning credit hours for your high school graduation requirements, you will need to pick up a form from your school office or from the adviser assigned to oversee the service credit hours. Take one of those forms with you when you volunteer so they can be signed off by the site supervisor. You then turn the forms in for credit. That is how most schools document the hours. Also, keep copies for your records, just in case the school loses them (yes, it has happened).

If you are volunteering at the Garden on mission Blvd contact Marie Rohner. If you are coming to the LEAF center garden please bring the form to the garden and give it to a board member or the nursery manager before working. Thanks,  Steve

Hi, Caroline,

Sarika is busy packing for her move to India, so it would be best if you contact Marie Rohner at the church.  Her cell phone is 510-938-1237.

What do we need?  We need help with everything from composting, weeding, setting up drip irrigation, planting, watering.....

Hope to see you after Memorial wkend - enjoy!!

my Cell number is 415 377 9200.

I think its sat on my office desk right now and I am out of town Memorial day weekend, but after that free to help.

Hello, fellow gardeners!

As some of you know, Sarika and her family are moving back to Mumbai, India early in June, and Andrei and Nadya are moving to Boston this month. So....we are really short of volunteers right now, and we would welcome anyone who has a little time to give us a hand!!  Thanks so much, and enjoy the beautiful weather....

Bonnie
