Discovery Community Garden

The Board of the Discovery Fremont Church has decided to form a church affiliated "community garden" . We will continue hosting this group until another avenue for communication  is found by the church.

A big thanks to all volunteers who started this garden and good luck for the new growing season.

Marie,
Will there be a garden work party this Saturday, July 3? I know it is 4th of July weekend so some people might have other plans.
I will be there Saturday anyway, at 10:00 as usual.
Thanks,
Bonnie

Marie,
Thank you for your comment. I will continue to work in the garden, but will also assist sometimes with the cooking in the kitchen. We all contribute to the growth of the garden ...being a LEAF member or non Leaf member. Sunshine & Blessings, Beatrice Ross

Don't forget about those who work behind the scenes that you don't necessarily see in the garden or on garden "work days". There are some who volunteer by delivering manure and other materials; by repairing and maintianing the equipment; by acquring or purchasing the plants, trees, seeds, or tools; and those who serve beverages and lunch on work party days.

Good Morning all you faithful volunteers!! Today Sarika and I plan to plant Cat's pumpkin seeds and some that Sarika has. We will be planting in the far eastern plot that Beatrice's hard-working chuch members rototilled and amended for us Saturday (thank you!!!). So be sure to water that area gently. You will need to use the hose at the Mission Blvd. side of the church since the other hose doesn't reach that far. That hose does not have a fitting nozzle, so just use the old "squeeze the end of the hose with your thumb" trick. Also, please do not give any additional water to any vegetables that are on the drip irrigation system. I notice a few new zucchini vegetables that are starting to rot. And, when watering the rest of the garden try (I know it's difficult) to just water the soil at the base of the plants.
The gopher man is supposed to come this morning to start trapping, so, hopefully, we won't lose any more plants. So far we have lost 7 heirloom tomatoes and 1/4 of a summer squash, not to mention all the potato plants that were eaten.
Everybody try to stay cool in the heat - but it should make our veggies grow even faster!!
Thanks again, Bonnie

Now that the gofers have left quite a few vegetables for us, I want to take the opportunity to clarify the harvesting policy.
Harvesting is not a one time event as some people think , its an ongoing job and the single biggest labor component in growing food. The harvest will be shared first and foremost by the volunteers that are harvesting and that have helped to build and grow the garden. If there are questions about harvesting , please discuss with Bonnie Marzo, our garden manager.

We are greatful to our hosts Mission Way Baptist Church, to make the land and water available and whenever possible its a good practice to share extras with the church members.

When the volume grows in future years, LEAF as a non profit organization has plans to take up to a third of the harvest to run a farmers market stand and a regular drop off at the homeless shelter or similar organization.

Thanks to all of you making this project possible ,

Michael

Beatrice and all. Our neighbor's to the north of us are supposed to have a tree service company on site today working on the giant hedges. Per city ordinance, the hedges are to be cut down to 8' along the entire length of the fence. The tree service company should only be working from the neighbor's side of the fence. Sugar Ray will be on site working today as well. So the sheds should be open when you arrive. FYI, the preschool next door is having graduation practice today inside the church from 9am to about 11:30am. The building will have limited access while the children are present. I will make sure we have water bottles available outside today.

Marie - any day during the week is OK with me for a mid-week gardening day.
Beatrice - we'll miss you on Saturday. I watered Monday at 10:30 a.m. and hosed aphids off the smallest citrus tree in the front. Could you take a look and see if there are any more on it? Thanks, Bonnie

Hello Marie,
I usually come on Wednesday mornings from 10:00am to 12noon. I will be at the garden tomorrow with Cathy to weed and water. Please have the tool shed open. Also South Bay Church members will come to work in the garden on Saturday June 26,2010 from 10:00am to 12:30pm. I will not attend on Saturday due to other community commitments, but Friday I will leave a pasta dish to share with volunteers for Saturday. Sunshine & Blessings, Beatrice Ross

I would like to add a mid-week gardening day now that the kids are out of school for the summer. What day works best for those interested in coming during the week? Wednesdays? Or maybe Tuesdays and Thursdays?
Marie
