Urban Homesteading Education

LEAF is planning to create a monthly workshop series on a variety of gardening and related sustainability topics and would like your input! If you would like to join the discussion regarding what types of classes / workshops / trainings you would like to see offered, and especially if you have a topic or skill that you would like to share with others, please join this group. We will be holding a brainstorming and planning session in the near future and want to get a general idea of people's interests and skills.

I am interested in container planting - and particularly using grow bags. There are some very innovative ideas out there - some people even convert denim jeans into grow bags!  It would be fun to learn more about these methods.

I like all of the ideas expressed so far!  To the list, I'll add Companion Planting.  Some plants can help each other grow healthier or keep pests at bay.  Importantly, some plants should not be placed near each other, or they hamper growth or deplete soil.  I know a little, but would love to learn more and incorporate that knowledge in the Girl Scouts' gardening at LEAF.

I "third" the first two comments below by Christina (go HMN Tri-City!) and Debra. :)

It took me a few minutes to see the invite. I echo the two comments below.

I have a back yard small garden and plan to turn 1/2 of my yard into garden so interested in information.

I would echo all of Chrisina's comments below.  In addition, would like to see information about Slow Food Movement, Seed to Table, getting kids in the garden.

I would love classes on soil building, pest control (gophers and insects), garden planning for small plots (show us how to plan in detail -- what goes where and why), winter gardening, front yard edible gardens that look appealing year-round, how to start a community garden (whom to approach when a vacant lot screams to be converted, water issues, et cetera), Planting and care of fruit trees.

Help us grow!

The City of Fremont has approved our plans to build community gardens in the old Mission Adobe Nursery, but this plan is contingent on our ability to raise $30,000

If we can raise $15,000 from the local community, StopWaste.Org will provide us with a matching grant of $15,000.
