Plant cuttings

Hi, It's getting to be time to trim my landscape again.  In the past I have offered it up to members who wanted cuttings of succulents, natives and Mediterranean plants.  Anyone interested in helping me trim my landscape in exchange for some cool plant cuttings can email me at merrill.w@sbcglobal.net Bill MerrillSee More

Banana corms

I have just dug up some very large fruiting banana plants in my back yard.  I have a huge pile of banana corm that are too big for me to plant in pots but would make nice pieces to transplant into some banana loves garden. These are both fruiting types, Orinoco and Sweet Heart (FHIA3).  They have produced bananas in my Fremont back yard for years but I am remodeling and they need to go.  No reasonable offer refused on the corms.  Contact Bill Merrill, (510) 505-9275 or merrill.w@sbcglobal.netSee More

Flavors from the Garden

If you buy most of your produce from the supermarket then the joy of tree ripened fruit may not be part of your daily experience. While biting into a ripe apple from my orchard I have had moments when world melts away as my palette floods with flavor. It reminds me how lucky I am to have this joy in my life. The experience of biting into perfectly ripe produce can not be described; it can only be shared by offering a taste to others. The flavors of our food probably contribute to a child’s…See More

LEAF Values

LEAF was created in response to the need for community gardens and local food production in Fremont. It is the child of a global market society where our fruit is from Chile, our garlic comes from China, and nothing tastes as it should. Food comes to our markets with a huge expenditure of fossil fuel used both in production and in transportation. We are living in the era where the last tracts of open space are soon to be paved with asphalt and local food production will become impossible. LEAF… Continue

What is California’s Growing Season? by Bill Merrill

There are many ways to interpret the phrase growing season. Strictly it refers to the period of time between killing frosts. In the Bay Area that would be the period between mid March and mid November. Gardens that we grow during this season are possible thanks to man made water projects. With out this extensive water distribution network our frost free season would be a very dry and dusty time. The dry nature of our growing season is evident in the wild fires that burn the natural hillsides… Continue
