Plant cuttings

Hi,

It's getting to be time to trim my landscape again.  In the past I have offered it up to members who wanted cuttings of succulents, natives and Mediterranean plants.  Anyone interested in helping me trim my landscape in exchange for some cool plant cuttings can email me at merrill.w@sbcglobal.net

LEAF Values

LEAF was created in response to the need for community gardens and local food production in Fremont. It is the child of a global market society where our fruit is from Chile, our garlic comes from China, and nothing tastes as it should. Food comes to our markets with a huge expenditure of fossil fuel used both in production and in transportation. We are living in the era where the last tracts of open space are soon to be paved with asphalt and local food production will become impossible. LEAF… Continue

What is California’s Growing Season? by Bill Merrill

There are many ways to interpret the phrase growing season. Strictly it refers to the period of time between killing frosts. With out this extensive water distribution network our frost free season would be a very dry and dusty time. The dry nature of our growing season is evident in the wild fires that burn the natural hillsides… Continue

Saving Seeds by Bill Merrill

Since the dawn of time, plants the world over have been manufacturing the little genetic time capsules that we call seeds. With the precision of a fine watch this bounty has annually triggered the gathering activities of humans and animals alike. Seeds are gathered each year for agriculture, for survival or out of simple fascination with the process of nature. Whatever the reason, every time we pick up a seed and place it in our pocket we engage in an activity that is as old as time its… Continue

Community Gardens and our Agricultural Heritage

By Bill Merrill

www.greengardenservice.net

We live in a region that has a rich agricultural heritage. Many of us are not aware of the important role the Tri-city area played in founding what is now the most productive agricultural economy in the world. I worked as a local nurseryman for many years without realizing that I was in a region where 19th century pioneer nurserymen had founded the industry. With a bit of research I found… Continue
