A half-acre, empty lot, unavailable for any residence (according to zoning laws) is currently on the market in Fremont.
Located between Hopkins Jr. High and Gomes Elementary on Amapola Drive, the property is listed for $79,000.
"PG&E Utility Easement does not allow for a residence. Zoning Institutional Open Space. Zoning allows for agricultural use, public parks or other simple uses like nursery, kennels or possibly storage."
While LEAFers might not have 79K to drop, the current owner might be willing to rent the land while the sale remains pending.
And, seeing how no housing can be built on the property -- and during a recession few people are in the mood to pay for 'useless' land -- the money making rent-it-to-farmers idea might be worth pitching.
With close proximity to an elementary school, a junior high and high school, the ecology teaching opportunities seem amazing!
This is the part where you chime in. :)
Happy New Year!

As it stands, there is no "rental" amount. The current owner would need to be contacted and persuaded to rent the land. This is what I am advocating. It would, indeed, take some finagling.
So what is the rent $ amount? That is my dream lot for a community garden! or outdoor classroom!
